ALL the "continuous" tenses (past, present, future, perfect) ALWAYS have 2 elements:

-Verb "be" (was, were, am, is, are, been)

-A gerund (verb + ing)

 

🍃🍂🍁🌾🌿☘🍀🍃🍂🍁🌾🌿☘🍀🍃🍂🍁🌾🌿☘🍀🍃🍂🍁🌾🌿☘🍀🍃🍂🍁🌾🌿☘🍀🍃🍂🍁🌾🌿☘🍀

NEVER combine verb "be" with did, didn't in the simple past.

The simple past and the past continuous can be combined to indicate that a long action in the past was interrupted by a shorter action in the past.

The words "while" and "when" are usually used in this context.
